About the role

Our Engineering team is based in 3 teams, made up of passionate, technically minded and forward thinking people, all working towards the same goal. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and friendly Product Engineering Lead to join our Engineering team and deliver market leading features across the Arbor platform. You will work closely with Product Managers to identify problems and define technical solutions and architectures, as well as provide mentoring and day-to-day management to the engineering team. You will have a key voice in Arbor’s technology strategy, and work across teams to ensure a high quality of software development and innovative features. 

Our platform is based on AWS, and deployed to Kubernetes using Docker and Terraform. Our core stack comprises a PHP backend, MySQL db’s, Elasticsearch, Redis, and React/ExtJS front-end, alongside auxiliary functions written in Nodejs. This role will be pivotal in shaping our journey towards a service-oriented architecture, and establishing new technologies and methodologies with the ultimate aim of providing the best experience possible to customers.

Core responsibilities

  • Providing day-to-day management and mentoring of Product Engineers, helping them to develop and grow
  • Working closely with the Product Manager and engineering team to solutionise feature requests
  • Creating appropriate documentation for new feature developments, including diagrams where appropriate
  • Ensuring compliance with engineering standards for areas of responsibility 
  • Producing well written code, using standard design patterns and methods
  • Leading in code reviews and pair programming with colleagues
  • Participating in tech-talks and team based learning to ensure knowledge is spread
  • Helping to hire and onboard new engineers, ensuring a smooth onboarding and short time to ramp up

About you

We’re looking for an experienced product engineer with experience with Object Oriented languages, a proven leader and mentor, and ideally PHP or similar language background. 

Beyond that, we’d love to see:

  • Past experience of leading and driving engineering teams
  • Extensive experience of Object Oriented languages and software development
  • Understanding of software engineering principles, such as SOLID, DRY etc
  • Understanding of relational database technologies such as MySQL, Postgres
  • Experience in instrumenting applications and focusing on performance and scalability
  • A positive and proactive attitude to problem solving 
  • A team player, willing to muck in and help others when needed
  • A driven personality who asks questions and actively participates in discussions

Desirable skills also include experience with cloud computing, enterprise solutions and Docker. Familiarity with software best practices such as Refactoring, Clean Code, Domain-Driven Design, Test-Driven Development, etc. would also be a bonus.
